Beta - Updates and Progress

What we need to work on

For the Beta, it was vital that we get the majority of the mansion design and interiors complete. I have been working on adding, making and finding props and furniture to give the mansion more of a background and atmosphere.

Interior Design

Using our agreed layout plans, I began finding and making objects for our game. I found quite a few ornate pieces of furniture with wooden materials that fit perfectly into the manor.

Using these objects, I worked firstly on one of the large common rooms. We wanted this room to look like a place the owners would relax in. There is old seating, a large fireplace, a rotten rug and plenty of books to convey the owners may have been heavy readers.

I then went to work on the various hallways, adding paintings, lighting and scattered furniture, conveying a derelict presence.

After these areas were complete and a theme had been set, I began work on adding more to the house and completing more rooms by adding objects, atmosphere, some lighting and materials.

Character/Monster Modelling

Our current Ghost model is a place holder so it was also extremely important that we work on developing character concept art and models. The Lead Artist and Designer produced these final sketches:

One concept depicts a 'Ghost Child' which is intended to scare the player through the mansion, rather than chase and defeat them.
The other two monster designs appear in the mansion in the later game and hunt the player. The design shows a malnourished, yet humanoid being which links in with our story about the history of the house.

I produced a design for a Cult Member:

I wanted this model to look human, but demonic. The character has glaring open eyes, yet a frail stature. He carries a heavy cross - linking to death, burial and cult worship further increasing the creepiness of the character.

Redeveloping the Door and Key Mechanic
The door system presented a few bugs and problems:

- If the ghost AI was looking at a door, the door would not open regardless of whether the player had the key
- Some doors would not open at all - if there were 3 doors and 3 keys, only one door would open

To fix these problems, I redesigned how the doors work. This system is simpler, yet requires multiple sections of code for each door.

When the player approaches a door, the game checks whether the player has picked up a key and a variable has changed. If so, the door is animated to open but if not a message will appear saying that the player needs to find a key.
